Sialadenitis: Etiology and Common Symptoms

Sialadenitis is a bacterial infection of the glands salivatorius, usually caused by stones blocking the gland or hyposecretion. Inflammatory process involving the salivary glands caused by many etiological factors. This process can be acute and can lead to abscess formation, especially as a result of bacterial infection. Involvement can be unilateral or bilateral as in viral infections. While chronic nonspecific sialadenitis is the result of duct obstruction due sialolithiasis or external radiation or may be specific, resulting from a variety of infectious agents and immunological disorders.



Etiology

Sialadenitis usually occurs after obstruction hyposecretion or channel but can develop without an obvious cause. There are three major glands of the oral cavity, including the parotid, submandibular, and sublingual. Sialadenitis is most common in the parotid gland and usually occurs in patients with age of the 50s and 60s, in chronically ill patients with xerostomia, patients with Sjögren's syndrome, and in those who perform radiation therapy in the oral cavity. Adolescents and young adults with anorexia are also susceptible to this disorder. organism which is the most common cause of this disease is Staphylococcus aureus; organisms include Streptococcus, coliforms, and a variety of anaerobic bacteria.


Common Symptoms

includes soft lumps that pain in the cheek or under the chin, there is pus discharge from the gland down the mouth and in severe cases, fever, chills and malaise (a common form of pain).
